Dear ScottSelva.com Blog,

I’ve neglected you for far too long. And, for this, I apologize.

I’ve been working all along doing some really cool voiceover projects, getting some great new narration clients, and simply keeping busy. Heck, I even post on Twitter every so often.

You’ve sat there for months doing your job, being visible to the world. But, do I give you the attention you need and deserve? No.

Well, I hope to change that. On this, the first day of summer…well, second day…let this be the beginning of a new season of blogging.

Hey, I even spruced things up behind the scenes with a fresh new upgrade to WordPress 3.0 and a bunch of plugin updates. That should make up for something. Right? Oh, don’t look at me that way, Blog. I feel bad enough as it is.

Yours truly,
Scott Selva

One of my favorite projects to work on is turning an ebook that my client has written into an audiobook. Most of the time, the writer likes to have this done as an added value for their clients. In other words, the ebook is available, but clients can get the audio version bundled with the ebook for the sake of convenience. After all, it’s a lot easier to listen to the material while one is, say, driving or exercising than it is to try and read it. The printed word, of course, is great to have to refer to later.

Recently I got to work with a guy named Harry who had written a series of articles about importing goods from China. I don’t think he had ever worked with a voice over artist before. So, when I started to send him his audio, I really got a kick out of his response.

“I’m very happy with the outcome, it’s good to hear what i’ve written become audio. I’m happy I hired someone to complete this instead of trying to do it myself haha.
thanks”

That’s a great attitude to keep in mind. If you’ve spent many, many hours writing a great piece of work, at the end, sure, you could record yourself reading it. You’ve probably got a USB headset you can plug into your computer that you could use. But, is that going to do justice to your hard work? Is that adding value for your fans? It’s something to think about.

In addition to getting the kids ready to start school this week, I picked up a couple of gigs. One of the jobs is a favorite of mine to do which is turning an ebook into and audiobook. I’m not trying to pat myself on the back here, but the authors always seem so delighted to hear their words interpreted by a voice over artist. Plus, I always learn something new. As a married man, in this case, I don’t need to learn how to pick up women, but it’s interesting nevertheless. And, hey, if I can help a guy get a few more phone numbers on Saturday night, all the better.

Yes, it’s been a long, dry summer here at Scott Selva Voice Overs. With the kids heading back to school, I’m realizing that I need to kick my marketing up a notch..or five.

I’m finding that the marketing aspect of this business is pretty challenging. After all, voice overs aren’t something that most people need, or even think about. So, it probably goes without saying that the hard part is finding the people who need a voice over artist, and then letting them know I’m here.

Sure, I have the website and the Twitter account. But, beyond that? Well, let’s just say I’m searching for answers.
